Kevin Hughes joined Kalamazoo County State Bank (KCSB) in 2013 as Assistant Vice President, Loan Department, with primary responsibility in mortgage lending. He was promoted to head the Residential Loan Department in 2014 and promoted to Vice President in 2015.

With more than 30 years of lending expertise, Kevin’s experience includes owning a mortgage service company and working for G.W. Jones Exchange Bank as the Branch Manager in their Edwardsburg office.

As a mortgage banker, Kevin reflects on the major changes he has seen in his banking career. “Mortgage loan regulations have changed and broadened significantly over the years from the Truth in Lending Act (TILA) to the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA), to the Home Ownership and Equity Protection Act (HOEPA) Rule, the Homeowners Protection Act, and the Secure and Fair Enforcement for Mortgage Licensing (SAFE) Act, just to name of few. We have seen many more mortgage regulations to protect all involved.”

In addition, Kevin has experienced the major changes seen in interest rate cycles. “With over 30 years in the mortgage industry, I have certainly seen the rise and fall, and rise of interest rates. As our interest rate cycles are closely related to our economic cycles, so are our inflationary pressures as we are seeing today. The Federal Reserve will continue to increase rates if they see our economy growing too strongly to reduce inflationary pressures. It’s all part of the interest rate cycles we live with as bankers and consumers.”

If there is anything Kevin is adamant about as it relates to mortgage banking at KCSB, its knowing that KCSB is one of the few banks that offers mortgages for self builds.
“In today’s competitive market, building your own home can be a great opportunity especially if you can do some of the work. Oftentimes this work includes finding a contractor who will do some of the major work like your foundation and framing. Then you can decide what projects you can do and perhaps what projects some of your talented friends can complete for you.”

Typical projects included in self-contracting and partial work can include this type of sweat equity:

  • Dry wall
  • Electric
  • Plumbing
  • Flooring
  • Painting
  • Trim work

Kevin concludes, “We’re community bankers, so we want to help you find your perfect place in our community, whether you build or buy. We do have competitive mortgage programs to fit most needs today. Feel free to stop by or give me a call anytime.”

Active in the community, Kevin volunteers with On the Ground, Conservation in Action-Habitat Restoration, SPCA of SW Michigan, Generous Hands, Bronson Children’s Hospital, and Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Kevin was the 2014 LM Angell Directors Award recipient, given to an employee who demonstrates outstanding job performance and community volunteerism.
